Pattern and repetition are at the core of Carolina Ponte’s practice. Though trained as a printmaker, Ponte works primarily in crochet and wet-media drawing, the latter of which falls into two groups, distinguished by composition: one group is characterized by intricate, symmetrical forms based on tapestries or decorative designs; the second group features amorphous forms built up iteratively. Her drawings contain multiple patterns, and typically feature bright colors. Ponte’s crochet pieces amount to wall-mounted sculptures or installations, often featuring hanging tubes or nodules of varying stripes and stitches, and sometimes building upon the compositions of her drawings.
