Winston Wächter Fine Art is pleased to participate in Aspen INTERSECT 2023. Featuring a selection of our represented artists between Seattle and New York, our booth highlights the versatility of approaches to narrative between representative and abstract contemporary art.
Iván Carmona imbues vivid, biomorphic ceramic sculptures with his native Puerto Rico, distilling hyper-specific memories and universal feelings into bottled forms of vibrant, monochromatic color. Julie Speidel‘s hand rubbed oil on paper works arise from megalithic stone sites on the British Isles and numerous histories of figurative abstraction, culminating in totemic forms that hold mysterious, archaic knowledge. Similarly, Timothy Schmitz‘ finds inspiration through a specific sense of place— the soft pastel sunsets of New Mexico inform his mixed media wall sculptures, which emanate a gentle, gradated glow. Through a complex process involving digital compositions manipulated through emulsions and resins, Schmitz also engages with narrative through formalist obfuscation.
Ethan Murrow more traditionally foregrounds narrative in his farcical landscapes and portraits, which reference the mise en scène of early cinema and the spectacle of the Hudson River School through characters partaking in exaggerated endeavors. Margeaux Walter‘s equally playful photographs explore the disconnect between humans and and landscape around them, ‘camouflaging’ society into scenery that cannot quite process the manmade events occurring around itself. Both artists tackle complicated relationships with nature through surrealist narratives that inspire as much as they challenge.
This selection of work highlights the diverse approaches to visual storytelling within our represented artists across wide-ranging mediums, themes, and narrative choices.
